Interfaith Community Feature: Muslim and Christian Youth Build Friendships
Last month, Muslim youth from Arkansas Culture and Dialog Center and Christian youth from The Pinnacle Mountain Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, two long-time partners of The Interfaith Center, got together for an evening of fun, friendship, and interfaith understanding.
The evening began with prayers from each faith tradition, and the ACDC youth shared flowers and kind words with the Pinnacle Mountain Ward youth regarding the recent church tragedy in Michigan. The night continued with games—both silly and serious—like “Would You Rather,” “Common Ground,” and “Speed Friending” where youth were invited to share about themselves, find commonalities with one another, and learn more about each other’s lived experiences. The night ended with desserts and conversation where youth reflected on the evening and asked questions about each other’s faiths.
ACDC board member Mehmet Ulupinar shared that “As the activities unfolded, I gratefully observed the joy and excitement among the young attendees; many of whom were experiencing an interfaith event for the very first time. As stewards of peaceful coexistence in our communities, I strongly believe in the importance of coming together and building meaningful relationships.”
Pinnacle Mountain Ward youth leader and Interfaith Center board member Dr. Rebecca Glazier said that in the midst of heartbreak in the wider world, “Spending time with some members of the Muslim community and building friendships was exactly what my heart needed!”
